Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. In film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated through the Baptist Church. In her early twenties Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. She performed the hit song"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was one of the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
